The
Bizarros have been in existence since January, 1976.
The first lineup included childhood pals Nick Nicholis
on lead vocals, Terry Walker on bass, keyboards,
guitar and viola; brothers Jerry Parkins on lead guitar
and vocals; and Don Parkins on bass, guitar, and vocals;
along with Rick Garberson on drums.
Today's
Bizarros lineup is nearly identical. The only exception
to the original lineup is Martyn Flunoy, who has replaced
the late Rick Garberson on drums.
The
Bizarros hail from the industrial wasteland fondly
referred to as Akron, Ohio, USA, and were each the son of
a rubber worker.
The
Bizarros' sound has been compared to the Velvet Underground.
Their influences include midwestern rock of the 1960's, European
beat groups from the mid-60's and late 60's West Coast and
New York bands.
In
the early 1970's the Bizarros were an intergral part
of the Akron Scene, an anomaly that was heard from
the U.S. to Liverpool and all the way to Japan.
The
Bizarros have released three records on Clone Records,
and appeared on the Akron Compilation album released in Europe
by Stiff Records. The Bizarros were signed by Mercury
Records after rock music reviewer Robert Christgau awarded
their From Akron album an 'A-' and 'pick-of-the-month'
in his Village Voice review. The band recorded an album entitled
Bizarros in 1978 for Mercury's Blank Records label.
The Blank label folded before the recording was complete,
so the Bizarros album was released on Mercury Records.
The
Bizarros music was way ahead of it's time. The energy
of the original Bizarros' songs is still there, however, a
maturity and simplicity of style have blended with modern
recording technology to produce a powerful, but easy to listen
to, sound. The Bizarros write songs with melodies that people
remember.
The
Bizarros are now back in the studio, recording their
upcoming release at Mannequin Odd studios in Aurora, Ohio.
Look for a new Bizarros release on Clone Records, early
this year.
